Valley Falls Safe Streets for All Action Plan
The City of Valley Falls was awarded funding from both the United States Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) to complete a Safe Streets for All Action Plan.
Safe Streets for All (SS4A) is a nationwide program created from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to fund regional, local, and Tribal initiative to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries. The program supports the USDOT’s National Roadway Safety Strategy and their goal of zero roadways deaths using a Safe Systems Approach.
Project Goals
The SS4A Action Plan for Valley Falls aims to accomplish several key goals:
- Enhance Roadway Safety: Develop strategies to improve safety for all road users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers.
- Strengthen the Transportation Network: Create tools and resources to enhance the community's approach to transportation.
- Assess Existing Conditions: Analyze current crash data, policies, and plans to identify and address safety needs.
- Ensure Comprehensive Engagement: Gather and incorporate public input that is comprehensive and representative of all Valley Falls residents.
- Set the Stage for Future Implementation: Formulate strategies and prioritize recommendations for the next steps in improving transportation safety.
Project Schedule
The project team began initial research to understand crash data and existing conditions in Valley Falls this spring. Throughout the summer, the team has met with a project steering committee made up of differing community representatives to discuss challenges and recommendations for next steps considering survey results, current data, and best practices. The final plan is planned to be adopted by the end of this year.
