POLICE OFFICER HIRING PROCESS

2. Background Investigation

  • After initial review of the City Application for Employment, candidates will be given a Background Investigation Workbook to complete and return on a given date. The Police Department will conduct a thorough background investigation. All information will be confirmed. Omissions or falsifications are grounds for rejection.

3. Panel Interview

  • Depending on the number of positions to be filled, candidates with acceptable backgrounds will be interviewed for the position of Police Officer by an interview panel. The interview panel will consist of the Chief of Police and members of the community. This is a professional interview and you are expected to dress appropriately.

4. Interview with the Chief of Police

  • Each candidate will be required to meet with the Chief of Police.  Applicants who successfully complete the background process will be invited to an interview with the Chief. Candidates who are successful in passing their Chief’s interview will receive a conditional job offer contingent on passing all required testing as outlined above. 

5. Psychological Examination

  • Each candidate must also pass an evaluation by a licensed Psychologist. A failure of the psychological examination can be challenged by the applicant at the applicant's expense.

6. Drug Screen

  • This examination will include testing for drug dependency or illegal drug use.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be eligible, candidates must have the following:

1.  United States citizenship (this is a POST Certification requirement).
2.  21 years of age by date of hire.
3.  High School Diploma or GED equivalent (copy of transcripts may be required).
4.  A valid driver's license.
5.  The ability to successfully complete all testing requirements.
6.  Good written and oral communication skills.
7.  The ability to function on a day-to-day basis with limited supervision.
8.  Candidates must successfully pass a thorough background investigation. During a thorough background investigation, candidates may be subject to a  pre-employment polygraph exam which would be used to confirm information in the Background  Investigation Workbook. The background investigator will contact employers, references, family members, neighbors, and others to assess the applicant's character.
9.   Candidates must successfully pass a  psychological examination (after a contingent offer of employment).

10. Certified by the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers' Standards Training (POST)  within one year of employment.
